The location of Burleigh Heads is a rather fortunate one especially to its tourism industry. The small suburb is flanked by the Pacific Ocean on its eastern side, the Burleigh Waters on its western side, Miami on its north, and Palm Beach on its south. All in all, the suburb is mostly surrounded by coastal areas. At its extreme north end, the suburb extends to a coastal strip that leads to the Gold Coast Highway. On the other hand, its extreme south end makes up its central business district. The Burleigh Heads suburb is also made up of two different sub-areas, and in a larger scale, it lies around 81 kilometers to the southeast part of Brisbane, and is right between Surfers Paradise and Coolangatta.

In the mid-1950s, the northern part of Burleigh Heads was known mainly as a sand mining site, and sand mining activities went on there for several decades. The 19th century then saw the beginning of early development in the small rural area in Queensland. The earliest developments were mostly made up of booms in the restaurant and accommodation services in the city, which supported the tourism that also sparked during that time.
